Live food for dwarf cichlids (apistogramma & rams)

Dwarf cichlids reward live food twice: once in the breeding cave, where conditioned pairs spawn more readily and more often, and again in the fry tank, where the difference between microworms ready on day one and “whatever was in the cupboard” is usually the difference between a grow-out tank and an empty one.

The feeding plan

StageFeed thisWhy it works
Fry, first free-swimming daysVinegar eels, then microwormsApisto and ram fry are small; eels stay swimming and available while the female herds the school, microworms become the productive staple from day 3–4
Fry, weeks 2–4Newborn daphnia / moinaThe growth step-up — fry that graduate to baby moina visibly outgrow siblings held on worms alone
JuvenilesDaphnia + young grindal wormsMeatier rotation for body and fin development before sexing and pairing
Conditioning pairsGrindal worms and daphnia in rotationRich, varied live food is the most reliable spawn trigger short of a water change; females in condition colour up and cycle faster

Practical tips

  • Start fry cultures when you see eggs or wrigglers — free-swimming arrives in days, and a tub started that morning is a week away from producing.
  • Feed fry 3–4 small meals a day near where the female parks the school; dwarf cichlid fry do not range far in the first week.
  • Keep cultures staggered: two microworm tubs and an eel tub running means a second spawn never catches you unprepared.
Watch out: Do not overfeed grindal worms to condition pairs in small breeding tanks — uneaten worms rot in caves and corners. Feed what is taken in minutes, and let daphnia (which stays alive uneaten) be the generous feed.

Common questions

What do Apistogramma fry eat first?

Vinegar eels for the first days — they swim in the column where the fry school hovers — then microworms as the staple, and newborn daphnia (moina) from about week 2 for growth.

How do I get my rams or apistos to spawn?

Condition both fish for 1–2 weeks on live food (daphnia, grindal worms, microworms) alongside stable, species-appropriate water. Live food plus a slightly cooler water change triggers most healthy pairs.

Is the Fry Starter Kit worth it for dwarf cichlids?

It is built for exactly this: banana worms, microworms and vinegar eels for the fry stages, plus daphnia (moina) for grow-out and conditioning the parents — one parcel, all stages covered.
