About this culture

Grindal worms are small soil worms (related to white worms, but happier at room temperature) cultured in a box of damp coir, soil mix or sponge. They are larger than microworms, rich feeding for growing fry, killifish, small cichlids and conditioning adults — and unlike many live foods they stay alive underwater without immediately fouling the tank. Hard to find in South Africa; easy to keep once started.

Best for

  • Growing-on fry & juveniles
  • Killifish
  • Small cichlids & gouramis
  • Conditioning adult breeders

How to culture it

  1. Use a shallow lidded box with ventilation holes and 2–5 cm of damp (not wet) coir, peat/soil mix or an open-pore sponge.
  2. Add the starter with its medium. Feed a pinch of oats, fish food or softened kibble under a small glass/acrylic plate.
  3. Worms gather under the plate to feed — rinse them off the glass to harvest clean worms.
  4. Feed only what is eaten in 24–48 hours. Overfeeding is the main cause of smelly, crashing cultures. Replace or split cultures when production drops.

How to feed it

Rinse harvested worms in clean water and feed with tweezers or a pipette.

A harvest contains mixed sizes — even fairly small fry can take the young worms.
